Volunteer

Parents, friends, alumni, and community members, please volunteer to commit time and energy to the Russell Byers Charter School! We offer a variety of different opportunities to take part in the RBCS community.

Please see the list below for how to get involved. To work with students, RBCS asks that volunteers secure required clearances and attend a brief orientation. If you're interested in volunteering, please contact our Dean of Students and Families, Kareem Goodwin.

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Parent Volunteers

  • Mentoring
Become a Big Brother or Big Sister – You don't have to change your life to change the life of a child. "Bigs" mentor a Russell Byers Charter School student once a week throughout the school year. They meet for an hour and play games, eat lunch or just talk. Bigs provide encouragement, advice, and friendship for the students, and we provide volunteer training and personal coaching. Learn more by visiting www.bbbssepa.org or calling 888.412.BIGS

Create a mentoring group - If you're interested in mentoring with friends, create a mentoring group! Currently, RBCS has groups of men and women that travel with students on field trips to explore career choices, cultural arts, and academic opportunities beyond the sixth grade.

  • Tutoring
Become a tutor and help improve RBCS students' math and literacy skills! Tutors work with individual students or small groups of students who need extra support in literacy, numeracy and mathematics. Tutoring sessions include skill development, review of topics that have already been covered in class and assistance with homework. Tutors work closely with classroom teachers to become familiar with the curriculum and the students with whom they will be working. Tutoring sessions usually last for one hour and are held most often after school, but sometimes occur before school and during the lunch/recess hour.

  • Help with After-School Programs
Come help with the chess club, science club, debate or drama! With a variety of after-school programs, RBCS welcomes volunteers to help instruct and participate in these great activities. For club descriptions and schedules, please check out our After School Activities Calendar [69K PDF].
