Ten members of the Russell Byers Charter School chess team recently traveled to Carlisle, Pa., to compete in the 2010 PA Scholastic Chess Championship. After a couple of tough opening rounds, the RBCS Knights pulled together and rallied to finish 8th in the K-8 (schools under 800 students) category. Highlights of the tournament included:
Hershell Williams, a 6th grader who walked away with a medal as a top overall finisher.
Sarah Durant, who is 4-years old and in 4K, who finished as the third best kindergartener in the state and the second strongest female in the state!
The traveling team consisted of Hershel Williams 6th grade; Mykal Washington 6th grade; Gabe Clark 5th grade; Khalil Nelson 5th grade; Kyle Nelson 5th grade; Ondrea Hunt 4th grade; Deon Harris 4th grade; Hayley Hunt 2nd grade; Shimayah Boozer 1st grade; and Sarah Durant 4K.
All of the coaches are extremely proud of the team spirit and great sportsmanship that was displayed by all of our members throughout the tournament. The Knights are now looking ahead to the 2010 Burt Lerner National Elementary (K-6) Championship Tournament in Atlanta.
