Job Description: Counselor

Organization Summary:
Russell Byers Charter School is a public elementary school located in Center City,
Philadelphia, with over 710 students from 43 neighborhoods. We offer 4K (Kindergarten for 4-
year-olds) through 8th Grade, a student/teacher ratio of 20:1, and an innovative hands-on
academic program, expeditionary learning.

Position Summary:
The School Counselor provides comprehensive development guidance and counseling
services for school students so that each student develops the skills, attitudes, and knowledge
to be a successful member of our caring school community. The Counselor will work with
students to develop all aspects of the students’ social emotional and coping skills. Working
collaboratively with other members of the school staff and with parents, the Counselor acts as
an advocate for the student, arranging for appropriate resources when necessary, and
assisting students in understanding the school and its environment, understanding themselves
and their relationships with others, as well as their strengths and needs. The Counselor
reports to the Elementary School Principal.

Duties and Responsibilities:
● Provide assessment and short-term counseling for individuals and groups, both for
students whose services are mandated through their IEPs and the general population
● Teach a comprehensive Social Emotional Learning program to the entire school
community through regular visits to each classroom.
● Plan and implement grade-wide and campus-wide events
● Co-facilitate peer mediation program
● Participate in the Comprehensive Student Assistance Program (CSAP)

● Coordinate student 504 Service Agreements, including providing Functional Behavioral
Assessments (FBA) and developing Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBSP) when
● Provide training and education to staff and parents on topics related to social emotional
health and wellness
● Provide crisis intervention on both individual and community levels
● Consult with families and school staff on mental health issues facing individuals and the
school community
● Connect families to outside resources when necessary
● Additional duties as assigned

Education and Experience:
 Master’s degree in school counseling or related field with PA State Certification in
elementary and secondary school counseling is required
 Knowledge of urban environments and schools
 Prior experience counseling students

Physical Requirements:
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required
such as:
 Functioning in classroom space – walking, sitting, standing, reaching
 Must be able to sit for up to two hours looking at a computer monitor, using a
keyboard/mouse and typing
 Must be able to stand for up to two hours instructing a classroom of learners
 Must be able to lift up to 25lbs on a frequent basis
