Job Description: Reading Specialist

Russell Byers Charter School is a public elementary school located in Center City,
Philadelphia, with over 710 students from 43 neighborhoods. We offer 4K (Kindergarten for 4-
year-olds) through 8th Grade, a student/teacher ratio of 20:1, and an innovative hands-on
academic program, expeditionary learning.

Position Summary:
The Reading Specialist role requires particular expertise in the area of reading instruction. The
reading specialist will support Teachers and Students in meeting the individual needs of
students in the area of reading. It is expected that the specialist will work collaboratively with
School Leadership and Teachers to identify and implement effective strategies for student
achievement. He/she will have further responsibility of understanding and assisting in
implementing current methodologies, effective instructional strategies and facilitating reading-
related professional development.

Duties and Responsibilities:
 Implement and monitor a plan for reading support
 Provide small group (pull-out) reading instruction (before, during, and/or after school) to
students in need of remediation
 Provide push-in reading intervention
 Provide one-on-one coaching for teachers in the area of reading
 Facilitate small group/grade group professional development
 Model, co-plan, co-deliver reading instruction
 Assist classroom teachers by providing them with additional strategies for those
students who have been identified for additional instruction
 Work with the classroom teacher to monitor student progress

 Additional duties as assigned

 Demonstrated knowledge of the five (5) essential components of literacy instruction
 Knowledge of effective reading strategies
 Ability to plan and administer effective school-wide specific professional development
 Ability to review students’ reading data to develop individualized remediation plans
 Ability to support teachers in understanding effective reading instruction
 Ability to establish and maintain working relationships
 Commitment to Russell Byers mission and belief that all students can learn
 Knowledge of teaching methods, curriculum, and education programs
 Experience with using educational technologies
 The ability to communicate effectively with parents

Education and Experience:
 Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred in Education, Reading, or similar
 Five (5) years of classroom or site-based teaching experience in a specific content area
 Experience supporting Teachers and Students in improving reading achievement
 Experience teaching in an urban setting a plus
 PA Reading Specialist Certification (K-12) preferred

Physical Requirements:
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required
such as:
 Functioning in classroom space – walking, sitting, standing, reaching
 Must be able to sit for up to two hours looking at a computer monitor, using a
keyboard/mouse and typing
 Must be able to stand for up to two hours instructing a classroom of learners
 Must be able to lift up to 25lbs on a frequent basis
