Expeditions Around Philadelphia
October 7, 2018
Russell Byers Charter School is focused on the principals of Expeditionary Learning which believes that when students and teachers are engaged in work that is challenging, adventurous and meaningful, learning and achievement flourish. RBCS follows the EL mission to create classrooms where teachers can fulfill their highest aspirations, and students achieve more than they think possible, becoming active contributors to building a better world.
At RBCS we take the “adventurous” part of learning seriously! Our 7th graders were the very first students to participate in the Herstory Scavenger Hunt in October. Students completed tasks (such as mimicking the statue of “The Signer”) at sites throughout down¬town Philadelphia to learn about women’s history. Expeditions like this are why partnerships are critical to our mission to participate in the Expeditionary Learning model. We take advantage of our location to take expeditions to Parkway institutions as well as focusing on building the whole child with a goal of building a strong and vibrant community through involvement in our City and its incredible resources. A recent visit to the National Constitution Center focused on citizenship and what it means and also what it requires.
